Additional Information

Albendazole is an anthelmintic drug and acts by producing inhibitory effect on tubular polymerization which results in a loss of the cytoplasmic microtubules

Usual Dose

Take 400mg as a single dose in both adults and children over two years of age. The usual dose in children between one and two years of age is 200mg of albendazole as a single dose. In heavy mixed infestation involving strongyloides or Taeniasis, a single daily dose may be inadequate and the dose may be given for three consecutive days.

If the patient is not cured after three weeks, a second course of treatment may be given. No special procedures, such as fasting or purging are required. Albendazole has not been adequately studied in children under one year of age.

Giardiasis (dose in children over 2 years of age)

Take a single 400mg daily dose for five days.

Albendazole is indicated for the treatment of the following infections:

Albendazole is indicated for the treatment of parenchymal neurocysticercosis due to active lesions caused by larval forms of the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium.

Lesions considered responsive to albendazole therapy appear as nonenhancing cysts with no surrounding edema on contrast-enhanced computerized tomography. Clinical studies in patients with lesions of this type demonstrate a 74% to 88% reduction in number of cysts; 40% to 70% of albendazole-treated patients showed resolution of all active cysts.

Hydatid Disease
Albendazole is indicated for the treatment of cystic hydatid disease of the liver, lung, and peritoneum, caused by the larval form of the dog tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus.

Albendazole is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the benzimidazole class of compounds or any components of the drug.

Albendazole may cause abdominal pain, dizziness, headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, or temporary hair loss.

In rare cases it may cause persistent sore throat, severe headache, seizures, vision problems, yellowing eyes or skin, dark urine, stomach pain, easy bruising, mental/mood changes, very stiff neck, change in amount of urine. Elevation of liver enzymes during treatment is a common side effect, but in rare cases there have also been reports of acute liver failure. Allergic reactions are also possible.
